Pediatric Eye Procedures
The most common pediatric eye surgery procedures performed by our fellowship-trained eye surgeon are to correct strabismus (“crossed eyes”). Surgery may be recommended to correct adult problems with misalignment. The treatment recommended for strabismus depends on a number of factors, including the degree of misalignment. Treatments range from eye exercises to surgery. For intermittent strabismus, in which the eyes do not cross all the time, the doctor may prescribe eye exercises—physical therapy for the visual system.
If a child with strabismus is also farsighted, the effort that it takes to try to compensate for the farsightedness can cause the eyes to actually cross. Sometimes this problem, called “accommodative esotropia,” can be corrected by prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. Often, the recommendation will be surgery on the eye muscles to properly align the eyes.
